Mutton Renaissance

As part of the Mutton Renaissance movement Taste Shetland have extended their brand range to include ‘Island Mutton’.

Lerwick butchers J. S. Smith and Globe Butchers are the first destinations in Shetland where members of the public can buy fresh mutton under this new initiative while the local Queens Hotel are introducing the dish this weekend to serve to a visiting delegation from the Soil Association.

Marketing Manger of Taste Shetland is Karl Simpson: “I think the fact that there is interest in mutton once more is great news for both farmers and the general public. I wholly support the mutton renaissance movement and would certainly like to develop mutton as a niche market meat in Shetland and possibly beyond. Fortunately, there is a recognition that Shetland mutton is particularly tasty so we are in a good position to satisfy the demand. Through trends in meat consumption, mutton has almost been overlooked by a generation. I would encourage any curious members of the public to step in to their local butcher or restaurant and give mutton a try – they will be very pleasantly surprised.”

Brand Launch

The new brand for Shetland lamb – Taste Shetland – has been successfully unveiled and is now aiming to take the range of products from the islands to a worldwide audience. At a week-long series of events in Shetland, the new initiative was welcomed and endorsed by butchers, hoteliers, restaurateurs, farmers and the general public.

Speaking at the launch dinner, Food writer Sue Lawrence said:

“My butcher, Crombies of Edinburgh, has Shetland lamb every year in the autumn. For me, Shetland lamb has always been a rare treat, with its distinctive flavour, enhanced by that very special diet. So, I was extremely delighted to be invited to celebrate the launch of Taste Shetland and the very distinct varieties of Island, Hill and Seaweed lamb.

In my opinion, Shetland lamb encompasses all that is important. It’s naturally lean, healthy, is a quality product and, of course, the flavour is outstanding. It is delicate and slightly sweet from grazing on heather grassland rich with wild flowers and herbs. The launch of Taste Shetland couldn’t have come at a better time as more and more consumers are becoming very aware of what they eat, where it comes from, and how it has been produced. It is important that the Taste Shetland brands achieve the recognition they deserve - not only by becoming the highly coveted product sought out by all the best restaurants and chefs – but also the recognised name sought after in every butcher shop in the country.”
