About Us
Taste Shetland is the meat trading arm of the Shetland Livestock Marketing Group (or SLMG as it is known locally) - a farmer cooperative of some 300 members. SLMG was formed in 2003 after a restructuring of the agricultural industry in Shetland.
Taste Shetland is based in Lerwick. The Marketing Manager is Karl Simpson who formed the Taste Shetland brand in 2005 after extensive customer research.
Taste Shetland operates a fully accredited abattoir (license no. 1137) at Laxfirth, Tingwall - the ancient seat of the Norse parliament. The abattoir is fully Quality Meat Scotland processor-assured and runs a management system which conforms to ISO9001 specifications. The facility is licensed to process organic products under the Scottish Organic Producers Group.
The Laxfirth abattoir consistently achieves among the highest Meat Hygiene Service rankings in Scotland.
The Laxfirth Abattoir is fully processor-assured under the Quality Meat Scotland Assurance Scheme certificate number: 060011005. We are also assured under the Safe and Local Supplier Assurance Scheme (SALSA).
